Course Description:
This course will provide a more detailed approach to public international law, which is essentially a set of norms, rules, and standards that balance relations between states.
In cooperation with the field of human rights and international organizations, this course will provide knowledge for the students regarding the role of relations between states for the maintaining peace and tolerance establishments.
Course Topics:
- Learning the meaning of Public International Law: You will be introduced to the international treaties, and general principles of law recognized by most national legal systems. Although not exclusively – these rules are widely applied by states, but they are not required to accept these rules in practice. Voluntary states renounce part of their sovereignty and agree to practice international rules. You will analyze:
- The most important treatises in history
- Resolving conflicts by international agreement
- The role of peacekeeping states
- The importance of protecting Human Rights: You will receive an overview on human rights. The importance of recognizing these rights by any state makes it possible to maintain peace. You will be given the opportunity to:
- Work in teams to determine the primary role of international human rights conventions (special attention will be given to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)
- Implementation of these conventions by states
- The causes that lead to the non-implementation of human rights
- The role of international organizations in maintaining the balance between states: International organizations are an important factor in developing relations and cooperation between states. They are a connecting bridge that helps bringing peace to a certain region. You will explore:
- The most important international organizations such as the United Nations, the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court
- The activity and purpose of international organizations
- Managing a conflict by international organizations
- The impact of international factors on peacekeeping: Maintaining peace is a process that requires dedication and cooperation. This process requires that not only citizens but also states to be tolerant of any conflict that does not affect their interests as a whole. You will work in teams to:
- Identification of the main factors for the breakdown and peace maintenance
- The role of everyone in the contribution of being tolerant
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course you should be able to:
- understand detailed information on international treaties and laws
- recognize the guarantee of human rights
- understand the impact of international organizations on maintaining peace
- explain the role of each of us in maintaining peace
- articulate the importance of being tolerant in a conflict
- serve as a bridge in resolving conflict

Non-Credit Options
Lite Level – This course is delivered on-demand with no faculty interaction and is perfect for lifelong learners who want to go at their own pace and who are not interested in academic credit but still want to experience the course.
Audit-No Credit – If you would like to participate when this course is offered in our Live Virtual Classroom mode, you may attend the live faculty webinars but will not be required to submit assignments for credit.
If you take a few courses and decide you want to officially enroll in a degree program, you can gain academic credit for Lite versions or Audit-No Credit versions by paying the difference between these course fees and a normal academic fee, successfully completing quizzes, submitting your reflection journals and delivering a Final Creative Assignment that will be graded.
For-Credit Options
Live Virtual Classroom: Study that takes place within Ubiquity University, in which Ubiquity academic coursework is accomplished through attendance in Live Webinars, with faculty and student interaction being a part of the Live Webinar content. To receive academic credit, you must not miss more than 3 live sessions, you must complete the quizzes and submit any other required assignments (if any), and a final creative assignment for grading at the degree level you are enrolled in.
Internal Online Independent Study: Study that takes place within Ubiquity University, in which Ubiquity academic online coursework is engaged in independently on one’s own and does not include faculty interaction. To receive academic credit, you must complete the quizzes and submit your reflection journals and final creative assignment for grading at the degree level you are enrolled in.

We allow students at all academic levels to participate in our online courses. However, those students who are enrolled in MA or PhD programs are expected to offer a more sophisticated analysis on reflection tasks, writing assignments, and in the final creative assignment. You will be graded commensurate with your degree level. Except for the Final Creative Assignment, word counts are offered as guidelines. If you need to exceed the word counts to submit an MA or PhD level response, you may feel free to do so as long as the word count expansion is reasonable and necessary.
