The Psychology of Deep Awareness: Learning to Embrace What Life Brings

Course Description:

Embracing both sides of your existence — pleasure and pain, health and illness, ease and suffering, and life and death – means truly befriending yourself and others. This deep acceptance creates an opening to both love and truth in all conditions.

This three-part course offers a new way of perceiving and encountering your existence – to refuse nothing and to learn from everything. This course will deepen your awareness of both sides of life – the contractive as well as the expansive — for yourself and your relationships. These new perspectives will change your mind about everything.

This course is based on an online course called Making Deeper Contact. It is suitable for life coaches, executive coaches, therapists, and those seeking individual personal development. It includes teachings on individual development, couple relationship, and the human life span.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Outline the framework for non-dual awareness that recognizes that apparent “opposites” belong together and must be perceived as such.
  • Define micro- and macro-narratives and describe their impact on emotions.
  • Describe, compare and contrast “responsibility” and “control” in everyday adult life.
  • Analyze the interactions between the ideals we set for our lives and our tendencies to feel depressed about or ashamed of personal life outcomes.
  • Evaluate the role of the limbic system in memory and recall of difficult or traumatic events.
  • Analyze the function of equality, reciprocity and mutuality in close relationships, including siblings, intimate relationships, or close friendships.

Faculty:

Polly Young-Eisendrath, PhD, is a Jungian analyst, psychologist, and psychotherapist in private practice. She is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont and the founder and director of the Institute for Dialogue Therapy. She is past president of the Vermont Association for Psychoanalytic Studies and a founding member of the Vermont Institute for the Psychotherapies. Polly is also the chairperson of Enlightening Conversations, a series of conversational conferences which bring together participants from the front lines of Buddhism and psychoanalysis. She is the author or editor of eighteen books, ranging from parenting, adult development, intimate and parental love, Buddhist theory, Jungian psychology to women’s development, couple therapy, couple development, and various paths to awakening/enlightenment from meditation to personal love. These books have been translated into more than twenty languages. Her most recent works are The Self-Esteem Trap: Raising Confident and Compassionate Kids in an Age of Self-Importance and Love Between Equals: Relationship as a Spiritual Path. Dr. Young-Eisendrath is a lifelong Buddhist practitioner in Zen, Tibetan, and Vipassana lineages and brings decades of leadership in mindfulness practice within the Buddhist context as well as integrated into her clinical work. https://young-eisendrath.com

Course Modalities:

Non-Credit Options

Lite Level – This course is delivered on-demand with no faculty interaction and is perfect for lifelong learners who want to go at their own pace and who are not interested in academic credit but still want to experience the course.

Audit-No Credit – If you would like to participate when this course is offered in our Live Virtual Classroom mode, you may attend the live faculty webinars but will not be required to submit assignments for credit.

If you take a few courses and decide you want to officially enroll in a degree program, you can gain academic credit for Lite versions or Audit-No Credit versions by paying the difference between these course fees and a normal academic fee, successfully completing quizzes, submitting your reflection journals and delivering a Final Creative Assignment that will be graded.

For-Credit Options

Live Virtual Classroom: Study that takes place within Ubiquity University, in which Ubiquity academic coursework is accomplished through attendance in Live Webinars, with faculty and student interaction being a part of the Live Webinar content. To receive academic credit, you must not miss more than 3 live sessions, you must complete the quizzes and submit any other required assignments (if any), and a final creative assignment for grading at the degree level you are enrolled in.

Internal Online Independent Study: Study that takes place within Ubiquity University, in which Ubiquity academic online coursework is engaged in independently on one’s own and does not include faculty interaction. To receive academic credit, you must complete the quizzes and submit your reflection journals and final creative assignment for grading at the degree level you are enrolled in.

We allow students at all academic levels to participate in our online courses. However, those students who are enrolled in MA or PhD programs are expected to offer a more sophisticated analysis on reflection tasks, writing assignments, and in the final creative assignment. You will be graded commensurate with your degree level. Except for the Final Creative Assignment, word counts are offered as guidelines. If you need to exceed the word counts to submit an MA or PhD level response, you may feel free to do so as long as the word count expansion is reasonable and necessary.

Live Virtual Classroom macrocourses are delivered by faculty in live Zoom sessions. You will have a course facilitator who is available to answer questions and offer additional assistance and that information will be provided to you upon registration.
