Nanocourse Description:
This course on SDG 5 – Ensure gender equality and empower all women and girls – allows you develop a holistic and global understanding of gender equality, it’s challenges and the roots of those, all in the context of the 2030 Agenda. You will explore what efforts have been made to achieve this goal’s targets, where your home country ranks in efforts to eliminate the gender wage gap, and finally you will have an opportunity to develop strategies to improve gender equality in your local area based on a case study.
In a globalizing world, our students need to think critically, globally and in terms of whole systems. This course supports Ubiquity’s mission in building those skills.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this nanocourse you should be able to:
- Understand SDG 5 – Gender Equality in the wider global context
- Self-reflect on your values and attitudes about the gender concept, gender equality and gender discrimination and the rights of women and girls
- Develop a simple plan of action to begin to create change in your local community

Larissa Demel is the current director of Youth Engagement for the Special Olympics Latin America, where she oversees youth innovation projects for inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities. Larissa was also a speaker at HABITAT III, the bi-decennial United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development, where she launched Urban Action, a youth initiative in collaboration with UN Habitat and AIESEC that set out to implement over 150 youth projects related to New Urban Agenda and SDGs within the first year of New Urban Agenda adoption. She has published papers on social innovation through youth action on the SDGs which is being used by over 50,000 young people in 126 countries and created an SDG social project framework for young people and has created the SDG 11 content on to the Young Person’s Guide to Saving the World.

Single nanocourses do not qualify for academic credit. However, enrolled students can add twelve nanocourses together, purchase a Nanocourse Credit Conversion option, pay the difference between the cost of the nanocourses and a regular trimester course at their degree level and submit a Final Creative Assignment for grading.
